Areas of Expertise - Special Education

As we begin the 21st century, the field of special education faces particular challenges in retaining and supporting teachers to work effectively with children with disabilities. Early Childhood Associates, Inc. has developed an approach to professional development and teacher support and retention that blends mentoring and coaching. We have pioneered a content-focused, mentor-coaching instructional design that can be applied to virtually any educational setting. Our efforts started with the company’s groundbreaking work in the design and development of Steps to Success, a multi-million dollar, technology-based curriculum for mentor-coaches working in Head Start programs.

Mentor-Coaching in Special Education is an effective strategy for the induction of new teachers, experienced teachers, and educators at all levels. Teachers can develop reflective practice and improve their instructional and assessment skills under the guidance and with the support of a skilled and experienced mentor-coach. Since special education relies on case management and a team approach, teachers adapt quickly to working with a mentor coach who validates their skills and supports their professional growth.

There are also positive trends in special education toward providing early intervention services, including young children in natural settings, and improving assessment strategies. Early Childhood Associates, Inc. has piloted Recognition and Response, an innovative early childhood screening process. Recognition and Response, combines ongoing observation and assessment with differentiated instruction to determine the most appropriate and effective program for the child. ECA also provides training and consultation services to public school special education departments, Head Start, and community child care programs on the assessment of at risk children and addressing the individual needs of children with special needs.
